The Master’s Special Secret
Long ago there lived a great martial arts master who was revered for caring and making each of his students feel special. Hundreds of students, young and old alike, came to his school to learn.
Each morning, they would gather in a great hall to practice under his close guidance. After class each day, they would go about their assigned tasks. Some would gather wood, others would clean the dojo and still others would carry water or work in the garden. Everyone had a job to do and they took great care to do their job well, because each of them knew that they were special.
One morning, a young person came to the school. His first words were the same as those of many beginning students, “I want to study here because I have heard that everyone is made to feel very spe-cial.†He was told to sit and wait until the lunch hour to begin his lessons. After a period of time he asked one of the students, “Where is this great master that I have heard so much about?â€
The student responded, “You will meet him soon, please be patient and learn.†Later, he asked another student, “With so many students how can everyone feel so special? I feel so unimportant.†“Be patient and wait until lunch,†was the response.
When the bell rang for lunch everyone began to quickly move toward the large dinner hall. The eager new student nervously stepped in line with a student he had spoken with earlier.
“There are so many here and I am a beginner, how could I ever feel special?†the young student asked. “Be patient†his new friend answered.
After everyone was seated, a large man in a white robe with a large bowl of rice stood at the end of the hall and joyously announced, “Come, everyone eat! Enjoy our food and company!â€
With the large bowl in hand, he strode toward the scared new student who did not know what to think of this jolly old food server. As he drew nearer he said in a loud voice,
“Welcome to our school. My name is Lu and I am delighted that you are here. I’m sure that you are a kind and wonderful person and I look forward to you and I learning and growing together.†He then placed a healthy serving of rice and fish on the student’s plate and smiled as he said, “Eat well, and good health to you my new found friend.â€
The new student sat quietly astonished. Ashort while later he learned from his fellow students that the friendly food server was actually the famous Grandmaster of the school.
